Many students today struggle with online learning, particularly in math. Why is this? While there is a plethora of excellent online resources for mathematics drill and practice, the simple fact is, for the majority of learners young and old alike, mathematics must connect with real-world examples and physical objects in order for it to really “sink in” and be well comprehended. In other words, learners need to SEE and TOUCH math. In addition to helping your child meet and exceed school requirements, I offer a variety of hands-on, manipulative activities tailored to address their specific needs and build upon their specific strengths.

Some students encounter struggles around 9th/10th grade (even when successful in earlier grades) if foundational skills were only addressed briefly or rushed through in later elementary and middle school years. Foundational skills include basic computational skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), mental math, basic measurement, and consumer math. All are critical to future success in Algebra I and II, Geometry, Probability, Statistics, and Pre-Calculus/Calculus. I offer a variety of age-appropriate methods to remediate and build upon these skills, in conjunction with current course objectives.

There are many reasons why young students struggle to read on grade level, including a weak foundation in early phonics and decoding skills, low-interest reading selections, or for some, reading challenge programs. My tutoring approach combines a variety of comprehension strategies and curriculum formats such as Saxon Phonics and Spell to Write and Read to support the student’s school curriculum. These are used in conjunction with whole language strategies to ensure a good balance between mechanics and authentic comprehension. Every attempt is made to help foster a love of reading by actively investigating quality, high-interest reading choices.

Writing

All Levels

For my younger (elementary/middle school) students, our writing sessions are focused on a four-step process:

  1. Attending to prompts using organized story mapping

  2. Paragraph construction (encompassing mini-lessons on introductions, good sentence structure, word choice, grammar, punctuation, flow, transitions, conclusions, etc.)

  3. Revising, editing, and “tightening”

  4. Production of a polished final copy

As with reading instruction, every effort is made to pull out elements of interest to the student, which in turn increases their motivation and creativity.

For my high school students, the process described above is also used, with greater emphasis on word economy, flow, and appropriate vocabulary, in addition to attending to specific requirements of the course (i.e. Honors, AP).
